With a history that goes hand in glove with that of the development of drum & bass and jungle itself, Tony Bowes, aka Justice, has consistently spearheaded new musical forms. Together with future LTJ Bukem sidekick Blame, a then 17 year old Justice created what was to become a blueprint drum n bass track in 1991s Death Row. The fruits of a longstanding appreciation of hip hop (inspired by Afrika Bambaataa and Herbie Hancock) coupled with an innate feel for experimental production that has served him so well since, Death Row was a seminal piece that launched Justice on a groundbreaking musical trajectory. What followed was a vinyl journey across just about every key label within the genre, with releases on Moving Shadow, Creative Wax, Ultimatum Breaks, Echo Drop, Basement, Precious Materials, R&S, Partisan, to name but a few as well as his own Modern Urban Jazz imprint, on which he recorded and released alongside Blame, the critically acclaimed Icons LP "Emotions with intellect".
The culmination of several years spent writing, producing, remixing, Djing and representing his sound, Justices Viewpoints is a debut album clearly hallmarked with classic credentials. From the spacial-vacuum hip hop of Breaker One Nine to the pastoral freshness of Intention; the electro-based boogie of Film to the gurgling, Detroit-flavoured dancefloor groove of consistently played out masterpiece Aquisse, Viewpoints breathes life into electronics, stretching the parameters of generic preconceptions while remaining distinctively of its kind. A truly awesome album, and one which was immediately eulogised
by the cognoscenti of the British press.
"Astonishing. Recalls LTJ Bukem at his best." MIXMAG
"Pure musical vision." MELODY MAKER
"Full of the kind of glistening melodies that you usually associate with Detroit techno. The suburbs have never sounded so good" SELECT
"Maybe the best drumnbass album ever" - MUZIK
Followed by 2000s Hears To The Future, an album that confidently aired Bowes latent hip hop and Detroit techno influences, and punctuated by a brace of 12"s of unstinting quality, Justice is rightly proclaimed by punters and pundits alike as one of the best producers in his field.
