An update on sound clips. We've now increased the length of clips that we're making on the site and are trying to go back and update many of the clips that have already been made.

All steps below are the same but we are now uploading 3 minute long clips. We've found that starting 30 seconds in often gives best results and gets most of the song's intro and a fair bit of the drop.

We need people with collections of mp3s to spare a little time to help make and upload clips. It doesn't take long and providing we follow some basic guidelines it all works fairly smoothly.

What to do

We're trying to get complete labels done as much as possible from all genres and eras. it's harder to manage one release here and there but that's not to say we don't want clips for these if that's all you have

Step 1

Download mp3 cropping software

Step 2

Convert your mp3s to 180 second clips at 128kbps. Don't make the start point 0 seconds but set it to 30 seconds in so we can make sure we get as much of the actual tune as possible and skip any long intros.

Step 3

Rename the tracks to match the catalogue number of the release

catno + - + side + track number

The metalheadz 6 example above has three mp3s

met006-a.mp3

met006-b1.mp3

met006-b2.mp3

Never use aa for a b-side even if that's what's listed on rdb and don't use capital letters for the file name

If you are doing many mp3s on a label that has a bunch of varying catalogue numbers then use a label identifier (substituting any spaces for underscores) at the start of the filename just so we can keep things tidy. There are also so many clips now that it's often best to add the label name anyway to keep file names unique

There are many, many changes around the place. Here are a few:

More opportunity to contribute to the site

Users can now upload images for artists, labels and releases as well as submit new releases to add to the database. We're currently only letting people submit releases from third party databases (for now just Juno/Juno Download but the Discogs import is nearly done).

To add a release just paste the URL into the pop up and the site will add it to the import queue. The data should be added to RDB very quickly afterwards.

Users can also add videos and genres to tracks. Please help us by adding genres where you can so that we can make sure that all tracks in the site have genres attached to them!

Completely redesigned database

The new database structure allows lots of added extras including artist name variations, multiple versions of releases and a far better way of accurately storing the release info itself.

New digital and physical collection

We've split the collection feature so that you can keep track of your physical vinyl & CD releases as well as storing all the tracks you've bought in a separate digital collection. At the moment there aren't all that many digital releases in the database, but feel free to pick out the ones on Juno that you own and add them to the site.

Track pages

Each track on the site now has its own page with all the releases it features on as well as sound clips, videos and lyrics, where available. The extra bits of content will be appearing more and more over the coming weeks.

There's plenty more, so feel free to explore!

We promise pure vibes all night and tune after tune all for a mere five English pounds. Anyone who came to join us in Camden last time round knows that the night was off the hook and we're really looking forward to this one!

We're doing a lot of work behind the scences at the moment and are going to be bringing you many changes to the site in the very near future (I know we've been saying this forever but we're nearly there now!).

We thought we'd get the site users involved and ask your opinion. Without revealing too much we're collecting people's favourite quotes and samples from tunes for a little feature on the new site. We've already had loads suggested by the RDB team but thought it would be cool to open this up to the users.

Feel free to suggest some below. We'd like them to be longer than a couple of words and not the length of a small novel but just jump in and make some suggestions.

What's new?

rolldabeats redesigned

Hopefully not a massive departure from the old familiar pages but we've given rdb a lick of paint and worked on improving the navigation around the place. User info is now accessible from the header with more menu buttons available to get you around quicker.

All-new homepage

We've improved the content on the home page to keep users up to date with new additions, forthcoming events, the latest news and a whole host of other stuff.

Sound clips for tracks

A long time coming but we now have sound clips for around 2,000 of the tracks in the database. We'll be adding many more in the near future so click the play icon next to a track name to play a clip -> http://www.rolldabeats.com/images/icon_play.png

User-added comments

Registered users can now comment on any release, artist or label in the database.

User-added release ratings

Rate your favourite, or not so favourite, releases using the stars on the release pages.

Browse pages

Browse through all the artists and labels in the database using this brand new part of the site.

Favourites

Add your favourite artists and labels to your profile with a link next to your collection and wishlist for quick access wherever you are on the site.

Genres

Tracks in the database can now have genres assigned to them. This can be set by the admin team only at the moment but you will start to notice genres showing up on release, artist and label pages in the near future.

Collection/wishlist

Main pages completely redesigned to match the label and artist pages. Users can now add releases to their collection or wishlist from the label and artist pages by clicking the new, easy to use buttons. Export to Excel is now possible with some more formats in the pipeline and you can now see how many people have or want a tune from the release pages.

There are plenty more changes around the place, these are just the biggest ones. We hope you enjoy the new site

Help RDB out

The site costs money to run and takes up a lot of our time. If you use it regularly perhaps you could show your support by checking out the merchandise - all profits go straight back into improving RDB.

It's been a really tough decision, I managed to narrow my favourites down to about 17 mixes in the end and, with 5 slots available for the night, it was so tricky to pick the winners. In the end we weren't able to decide so we're going to give out sets to a few of you for the gig on the 3rd and offer a number of you sets at the next RDB session at The Castle (assuming that's where it will be), date to be decided. If your name's not on the list that doesn't mean you haven't won a set and there were several that we are totally gutted to not be able to offer a set to.

So, on the 3rd we've thought of a provisional line up. Times may well change and if your name's here and you can't do that time then let me know ASAP. Also, we're using forum names here but if that's not how you want to be credited then again let me know.

New features

New design: not a huge change but things look a little prettier now

Scrubbable timeline: handy for our new longer clips, you can instantly jump to anywhere in the tune now

Clip info: Names & tune titles now displayed so you can keep track of what's being played

Pause button: does what it says on the tin!

Improved file loading: no more weird waiting for track buffering or strange 1 second spurts of sound before the clip plays!

Error reporting: Helpful messages when there has been a problem, at least you'll know why nothing's loaded now

All problems with different browsers should be fixed and anyone noticing anything weird please post in this thread.

We've got a few more changes coming very soon but will leave them for another day...

Those who came down last time know what to expect - tune after tune from early in the evening until the sun starts to shine again. On the night will be playing the RDB residents, Equinox and Haste, but this time we're offering you lot the chance to DJ along with us.

RDB DJ competition

We'd like to open up the decks to our members and give them the chance to come along and join the party. There are only a couple of rules: You have to be a member of the site and you need to play what we'd loosely call old skool.

To be in with a chance we just need you to submit a mix of you playing some awesome tunes. Mixes should be no more than 30 minutes long and must be posted below in this thread, together with tracklisting. You can play any style you want, whether it be early 90s tunes (or before!) to more modern style drum & bass, just nothing completely new.

The RDB team will listen to all mixes posted and will select our favourites for the night and invite them to come down and play a set.

The closing date will be the 21st September so you have four weeks to get your mixes in. We'll be in touch as soon as possible afterwards to arrange set times with the winners.

The do will be completely free to get in with donations towards the site accepted on the night if you feel like helping out a bit. Because of this there won't be any fees paid for DJs but we will try and sort you out some cash for travel if you need it as well as drinks on the night. The Castle is in Aldgate, East London so we sadly can't pay for people to travel long distances to get here unless they can arrange to be in the area anyway on the night.

This is all done for a love of the music and, we hope, to give some great DJs a chance to come and play at what we assure you will be a wicked night.

No ideas what I'll be playing yet but I'm there for three hours on the 29th August so come down and have a drink if you fancy some tunes on the bank holiday weekend. Joining me on the night will be DJ Flight who I'm sure will be laying down some wicked beats.

Playing some wicked old skool all night. Expect tunes all the way through the 90s from hardcore through jungle all the way up some dirty Headz style beats.

We'll be at The Castle, 44 Commercial Road, London EC1 1LN, the infamous late night boozer that has played host to nights from A Bunch Of Cuts (D-Bridge, Calibre, Marcus Intalex, Klute, and others) Nucleus & Trax, Bailey, DJ Trace and a host of other luminaries...

The night will be kicking off around 9ish and going through all the way until an impressive 5am.

Insession kicks off its summer programme on Saturday the 16th May by inviting three of our favourite patrons to get behind the decks for another alternative throwdown.

1xtra's premier dnb host Bailey will be joining us as he?s a long overdue guest and knows exactly what we expect down at the sessions.

He?s a multi award winning radio presenter as well as long standing resident DJ for Goldie?s Metalheadz outfit and Fabio?s night Swerve.

Bailey?s true passion lies with being the best selector possible and we?ve no doubt that?ll apply to his styles outside dnb.

Another session regular, Zero T, has agreed to come back and refresh our minds with his varied influences. Zero T is arguably the brightest rising star out of Dublin's dnb scene and his influences range from the early 90s conscious hip-hop sounds of Pete Rock, Premier and ATCQ to UK trip hop artists and labels such as Mowax, Ninja Tune and Massive Attack. Add to that a great knowledge of 70s soul, funk and blue note jazz and you can imagine why we?re looking forward to his return.

Finally Mr Haste will be getting involved, bringing evidence to the table of his serious vinyl addiction and unhealthy knowledge of archiving records. We?re not sure exactly what to expect from Tom but do know he?s collected most styles known to man and is never afraid to play them!

Also don?t forget to catch Valve recordings Craggz who will be road testing his new house productions and Bensamba who will be dropping more trademark brasilian broken beats for the early starters..

Gonna try it out and see how it works but the main problem I have is tracking down the vids in a decent format. I have a few and they'll do just fine but I know there are loads of old skool and dnb videos out there that we could use.

Can anyone help out at all? I know that this would be something that would be cool for users of RDB and we should be able to hook it up easily enough so why not?

For the coming period all effort will be put into finishing and testing this new framework. There will be lots of changes, but mainly from a backend point of view. Once all this is done I will be able to do other things on the site than adding new information. There must be about 438572 suggestions for new things on the site. A lot of them useful, but time simply has not allowed me to actually work these suggestions out. This is exactly what has made me lose interest in the site in the past for some time. Adding new features is way more satisfying than adding new releases.

The consequence for the moment is that a lot of updates will be stalled. Mainly the ones coming in through the forums as they usually take up the most time. Especially with all the discussions going on lately. In short: if your information was posted on the forums and has not been inserted in the database with this morning's update it can take a while before it will. Once we're done with this new thing and more people can make the alterations I expect we should be able to catch up quickly. Do note that the submitted information is not lost; it will be used, not straight away however. Therefore I would politely like to ask not to reply in the earlier posts about when the particular information will be added to the database.

I apologize for the (upcoming) lack of updates; I hope you understand that I will need to put my spare time into the upcoming transformation.
