Ornette Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 JJ once remarked at some stage about all these alternate versions of tunes that appeared on various Dr. S Gachet mix tapes. Well here's one to get you perplexed. The 1992 released Brainwave E.P. saw one tune getting the limelight - "Hold Me Tight" - a charming little affair, even if a bit trashy (But thats an old old debate isn't it - the merits of scratchy-quality old skool 'ardcore...) Anyhow. At the start of the b-side of the Dr. S Gachet mix tape "Audiomaze 30" (Yaman Productions - DRG01) that came out late 1992 or even early 1993 was this tune that just blew me away. It started out with this little synth-flute melody that built up from the B.D.K. "Raw" breakbeat to a 4x4 beat and a wubbling 303 and then a happy synthy lead-line and a stomp clap stomp clap and then a dreamy drifting chord sequence (and not to forget the wubbling 303) and so on... Well I had no idea who it was but I loved it. Kinda for those who might appreciate the sort of fast techno housy style of hardcore of the time, such as the Krispy Krouton Vol. 1 E.P. (I think "Diet Ham & Mushroom" was the one of my choice?) and maybe the Agent Orange - Getting Ruffer (Kaos Mix) and maybe even the Anthill Mob - Black Rushin' (Original Mix) Still it was not until 1998 that I discovered something about this tune. Picking up the Brainwave E.P. cheaply ("oh I might as well get it" kinda thing) I discovered much to my surprise that this tune was none other than "The German Project"!!! But hold on. It's not the same. It's just not as good as the one on the Dr. S Gachet mix tape. It's all trashy. There's no wubbling 303, for one. And there's no dreamy drifting chord sequence. Well, I don't know whats going on but it seems that we have an unreleased tune. I can only speculate that possibly Dr. S Gachet may well have done himself a special re-make of this tune, all for himself. The production quality on it is improved ten-fold! It's like someone took "The German Project", saw an excellent basis for a track, and re-made it, all from scratch. Well, I hope someone can maybe offer a little more info on what this track is about, because I would love to know. Until then, my Dr. S Gachet - Yaman Productions DRG01 mix tape will remain as one of my prized possessions! Thank you. Quote
eXtreme Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 not sure if you have seen it Ornette, but ive had a page going with Yaman sets & tracklistings: http://www.hardscore.com/yaman.htm just had a look & ive had the first tune on the B side ID'd as: Space Cube - Kool Killer (Mental Terror Mix) - Force Inc also just played the 'German Project' track & cant believe how similar the 2 tracks are! Space Cube are a German Artist & the mix is from 1992, The 'German Project' tune on Brain came out in 1993, so looks like that was made & sampled from the space cube 12". Quote

I'm not sure when the Force Inc release came out but the likes of Fabio were playing Live Is Picnic in summer 1992. Quote

That is fascinating. Although may I point out that the Brainwave E.P. came out in very late 1992, sure of that much... hmm those Brain Record cat numbers are confusing, arn't they (as confusing as the Reel 2 Reel/De Underground maybe?) Brainwave E.P. defo came out before the 2 Dope E.P. that much I am positive of! Quote
Ornette Posted August 7, 2005 Author Report Posted August 7, 2005 Yes, I'm impressed with your Yaman page. Always wanted to know more - I knew you were doing the Bukem tapes, well done for getting the others done. there's a few other tracks on the Dr. S Gachet tape that I was unsure of (those two F-Project tracks?!) so thanks again! However, to fill in the gaps from my side, I have for a long time been convinced that the 3rd track on side A has got to be the 'original' mix of 2 Bad Mice's "Pitch Black". I don't know if this is possible, because for a long time there was no hint that this track even existed (!), but more recently a 2-track promo version of SHADOW26 appeared in the tarzan database so I feel more justified in my assumption... now's to track it down and give it a listen.... you have two unknowns between the Intense and the Blame track? it sounds like just one to me... lastly, track 10 on side B is:2 Boasters feat. Cloud 9 & Pedro ? Granny (Dem Riddim Yah) - Original Mix (Daddy Armshouse, 1992) P.S. Can't believe Bukem played "Chapel Of Love" on one of his mixtapes! <{POST_SNAPBACK}>extreme: sorry Ornette ! i seemed to edit your post instead of quote it ! Quote
eXtreme Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 Thanks Mate, it took a long time to get the tracklistings but could never have done it without help from people like JJ & backtotheoldskool forum bods. Track 10 (side A) has been annoying me for ages now, im sure i have it or at least know it from somewhere. & good spot, there is only one track inbetween Track 3 could well be the flipside to the mass confusion that he plays, as you see from the tracklisting Gachets tends to just flip records & play the other side straight away. Thanks for the additions, page updated. Quote
