Notes:

Especially noted for its reuse in Public Enemy's - Terminator X To The Edge Of Panic, this break originates back from a more innocent age of hip hop, a pre- sampler era. In the clubs breakbeats could & would be used, scratched & backlashed by whatever DJ would be spinning at the time. But without such technology that would not start becoming widely available in the mid 80's, made-up rap records would demand that specially created music be made. Sugar Hill had a special in-house group of musicians that would specialise in recreating the sound of a breakbeat hook - take Sugar Hill Gang's - Rappers Delight - does not use any music direct from Chic!

 

In this instance a hook has been created specifically for Spoonie Gee that appears to be wholly original and unique. This excellent break, reused otherwise in hip hop a number of times, sounds excellent on 45rpm and I'm surprised its not been used more often! Time to revive, you producers out there!!!

 

The "Godfather of Rap" as he was (later) known lays down his silky egotistical vocal charms on this one.

No, it uses the breakbeat first & foremost then it goes on to grab a vocal sample from the same source. But I spose it could be added to the "Love Rap" sample source thread, already started...

Just discovered something about this break. Apparently it is based on Tower Of Power - Squib Cakes, an older funk record from 1974

 

The sample source is still definitely the Spoonie Gee, but on listening it is a recreation of that Squib Cakes track, that no doubt would have been cut up back in those early hip hop days
