Ornette Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Thought it was about time this tune had a thread of its own! Ostensibly linked to Prototype, although don't think there's any evidence it was coming out on that label, this tune first surfaced around early 1997 being played by Grooverider on his 27th Dec & 3rd Jan Kiss FM shows and his Essential Mix from that same period. Not hearing anything of or about since that time and desperately scant for details I remember reaching out to Andrew Rieth (founder of the Place To Be site [web archive]) about it late 1998, being the only other person who seemed to know about this tune... who eventually told me: "the latest news is that that DAT for "what's the difference" has been lost... horrible. that tends to be a problem w/optical." It's certainly one of the best tunes never to get a release, and surely deserves an award for 'Best use of a 909 since Mantronix in the mid 80's' Here is a nice long clip of it, from the tape Andrew Rieth swapped with me (Grooverider & Fabio Xmas special, 27th Dec 1996) Optical - What's The Difference (xmas 1996).mp3 Worth noting, this tune has actually resurfaced again of late, being heard both on an Optical studio mix: [link]and the recent Bailey show on 1Xtra, 11th Nov 2009: [link].
