Ornette Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 (edited) Break name: Cold New Yorkin' Artist: King Sun Track name: Cold New Yorkin' Original release: LP, Righteous But Ruthless Label: Profile Cat number: PRO-1299 Year: 1990 Producer: King Shameek Based on: The Cecil Holmes Soulful Sound - 2001 – with thanks to @thunderbird98 ! Example: Bug Kann & Plastic Jam - Made In Two Minutes Cloud 9 - Bugged Darkman - Bad Boy Skank Notes: My premier revelation! Been sitting on this one a while. I stumbled across this one back in 2005 whilst going through my old Max & Dave Kiss FM tapes from 1990. Only after a few listens did I think, hold on a minute, flipped the recording onto 45 and hey! it was the break I knew so well from Bad Boy Skank. I was particularily excited as I'd just only picked up the Cloud 9 repress a few months earlier I always thought this was Tony D on production, who I was saddened to discover had passed away when I looked just over a year ago This is quite an obscure break and a particularily good album track that I'm surprised didn't make it onto a 12", I have a few more listed here, lets see if you can spot any others (I had noted that HMM came close, but didn't quite hit the mark with this one) 5uxn1sDyUQ8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXMWMLWygxc Edited May 9, 2025 by Ornette Updated 'based on' info Quote
JVXP Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 SWEET!!!! It's a second gen one?! I mean it must be an old break beat + a vocal. It has the cut up "ain't no" bit you can hear on "Made in 2 Minutes". Nice find! Quote
Ornette Posted March 24, 2013 Author Report Posted March 24, 2013 I'm not sure what its based on, do you have any ideas? It was getting a lot more advanced by that stage and not just relying on straight breaks, I'd say it was a composite beat built up from a variety of sources, but could be wrong... Quote
Ornette Posted August 9, 2013 Author Report Posted August 9, 2013 Found the vinyl rip I made of this that was on my other computer, dont know if its of any use now its on youtube King Sun - Cold New Yorkin' [clip] cut.wav Also, it's used in:Dance Conspiracy - Dub Wars (Chapter 1)its a bit hard but you can hear around 1.06, seems there's so many in the mix Quote
thunderbird98 Posted April 29, 2025 Report Posted April 29, 2025 Hello, I'm new to this forum, but I think I found the source to this break! It's the beginning of 2001 by The Cecil Holmes Soulful Sound. https://youtu.be/u2K_zlCdOUc?si=-Yelw6DZIJvPNB5s Quote

Was about to say I'm not sure this one is being used in the Cold New Yorkin', though turns out I am familiar with it from its use in Tim Dog - Step To Me [1991]... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qucruBnaBlk Actually, no I think you're right, it's that bit exactly at 0m04s that's being used, with the held piano tone! Further more, that drum roll from the very start is being used here & there also Looks like the King Sun track is also helpfully back on youtube as well: I see there's a bit at 3m01s where whatever the "2001" loop is being overlaid with, is playing clean, though I don't recognise it. And then a tamborine part overlaid to that to finalise it off. Good spotting Quote
