Magazines master list – 1991 - 1999+

Can anyone confirm if those three Labello issues are the ones that exist?

There is a notice in #3 offering £5 subscription for "bi-monthly issues over the next year"... incidentally, it seems those two 'Raize EP' releases i.e. LB29 & LB42 were put out and titled specially as to raise funds for the magazine.

I don't know for a fact, but I think these issues were meant to be inserted into Labello Blanco releases and distributed that way, though I'm not sure how many shops actually bothered. My ones I got all separately, at least one I can remember picking up from Goodness Records in West Croydon

I have a photo of the three issues here, that I took for a thread on DnBA a few years back

The Mathmatix mag that Ornette mentions only last one issue I think and then turned into Atm update which ran for another 2 issues. I have these aswell.

Thanks, I'd wondered about this and was going to ask - the Mathmatix issue itself mentions about being a supplement "released directly in the middle of the three month ATM gap" but I hadn't heard anything of it since buying that copy back in 1999.

It looks like Juno has details for most of the Atmosphere issues after #46 and seems to have some of these ATM update ones listed as well

I've got issues 14, 15, 18 - 20, 22, 23, 32 - 55 of Atmosphere / ATM so if there's any info you need on the issues just let me know.

I think this was more me trying to look up on a couple of things I had vague recollections of and then all this ending up being more complicated than I expected. At the moment I figure it's most useful if we have a master list of issues, and a formal way in which to cite them.

At some point maybe we could move to giving contents/overviews for each one, and hot link from the main post... that would be a much larger task over the long term

Had a good look here, thanks
In all, I've managed to find scans of most, including from your own blog, up to issue #52 - is this the last one?

This link here says it "ran from 1992 to 1994 publishing a total of 51 copies" -
https://www.rendezvousprojects.org.uk/ravescene-magazine/

The scan for #52 says "SPECIAL MEMBERS EDITION" and is only 4 pages, so was this was a final one sent out to subscribers only? It's quite late into the year, October, given that #50 was April.
https://archive.org/details/zine_ravescene52

I'm trying to narrow down publish dates for this magazine. It seems most issues carry the blurb at the bottom of the last page "This magazine is distributed free of charge to 20,000 ravers every fortnight and is going to get bigger and better". However from looking at a sample from 1993 it seems it was more likely it was three weekly.

#31 - listings from       12/13th Feb, adverts for 19/26th Feb
#32 - listings from      26/27th Feb, adverts for 12/19th Mar
           reviews/refs to 12th (Vision)
18th (last ever Rage @ Heaven)
                                       19/20th (Labrynth raided)
#33 - listings from      19/20th Mar, adverts for 20th Mar/2nd Apr
reviews/refs to   2nd Mar (Pulse FM raided)
nb. the 'X By Any Means Necessary' & Obssession 'Passion' adverts are without dates explicitly stated
#34 - listings from       7/8/9/10/11th Apr (easter), adverts for 3/11th Apr
reviews/refs to  20th Mar (By Any Means Necessary)
#35 - listings from       24/30th Apr, adverts for 2nd May
reviews/refs to  11th Apr (World Dance)
#36 - listings from       7/8th May, adverts for ~7th May
           reviews/refs to  24th Apr (Reincarnation)
                                        30th Apr (Universe)
#37 - listings from       21/22nd May, adverts for ~22/29th May
reviews/refs to  30th Apr (Mayday IV 'The Judgement Day' [Germany])
#38 - listings from       10/11/12th Jun, adverts for 19th Jun
reviews/refs to   29th May (MTV filmed at Double Dipped)
#39 - listings from          2/3rd Jul, adverts for 3/5th Jul
           reviews/refs to   19th Jun (Elevation 'Payback 93')
#40 - listings from        23/24th Jul , adverts for ~24th Jul

Now, issue #40 has on the cover "Ravescene Magazine is now distributed nationwide by Mo's Music Machine" so does this point to the magazine being published on a monday? Certainly, that was the industry standard for record releases, and adverts for Mo's in several of the issues list forthcoming 12"s with dates all corresponding with that.

Though, from memory I seem to remember it was 'wednesdays' it was said that Blackmarket used to get their new releases in.

So, questions -  were mondays, or weds/thurs more likely, and can we determine publish dates?

NB. Currently, absent issue scans are:
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18,
26, 28, 30, 33, 49, 50
(I have issues both 33 and 50)

#52 is the last one afaik

On the front page of #49 - "Special Souvenir Issue To Celebrate The First Annual Hardcore Awards"

The first 6 issues didn't have issue numbers and the issues labelled #2 & #3 on the rave zine archive are incorrect. I believe #2 is actually #4 and #3 is actually #5

There is no issue #26. There is an issue #27A instead - "Yes, we missed out no. 26, so this issue is no. 27A no. 28 will be out on November 26th"

There was also an issue #19A published between issues #19 & #20.

Issue #1 (December 1994) - # ??

Ahh! - so this is the one I've got an associated publication of

It's titled 'Underground', took me some time to decipher that because the lettering used is awful. Doesn't have an issue number or given date other than stating "THE PROMO ISSUE", but inside clarifies it's a promo for a forthcoming I.C. magazine

It's A5 in black & white, with a photo of Jason J on the cover, and looks like is from Sept 1994, referencing the (legal) launch of Don FM on the 27/08/94

Little other details apart from seeming to be centred around someone called Phabby J and forthcoming title is short for "(I)nformation (C)entre" due late in October

Ok, so it seems the publication offers explicitly three dates in which to help us with this -
26/11/1992 which is a Thursday, 25/10/1991 which is a Friday and 20/01/1992 which is a Monday.

Now the "October 25th" date stated by issue 25 you'd expect to be correct, as this was their birthday. However, it is confusing that the issue itself has listings for the 9/10th Oct... Nonetheless I think this is a date we can rely on, pointing towards the magazine being published on Fridays.

You are right about the issues currently as '2' and '3' being later -  the former having listings for the weekend of 13/14th Dec and the latter - seemingly the week immediately after - having listings / adverts for the entire Christmas period from the weds (18th) right through to the 20/21/22nd, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Reasonably, you'd expect a publication as this to offer a week's notice on forthcoming events, so some point week 50 for that latter issue (i.e. week beginning 9/12/91). However, it also states "We'll be back on January 20th 1992" - a monday - which also doesn't seem 'right'...

However - I think this can be explained that by schedule, given that issue 1 was 25/10/91, that latter issue really ought to have been some point week 51 (i.e. week beginning 16/12/91). So - the "January 20th" date was a typo/mistake, confused by the fact that the last issue of 1991 was meant to have been December 20th!

I think what we are seeing with this publication is likely that it went to print on a Thursday - with some copies then appearing locally that same day, and the rest distributed / appearing more widely for the Friday (explaining the "November 26th" date stated by issue 27A)

I think I feel confident enough to offer a full dated list for these now. I'll post shortly.

Notes:
It looks like issue #1 was late for some reason, and was intended to be launched on the 17th (wk. 42)  This might explain why their birthday issue (#25) appears to be a fortnight early, and also why they had to do two-in-a-row to fit in for Christmas 1991

#19 is either a typo or mis-numbered and was meant to be #18, hence why there was a #19A. This is the same for #27

Issue #20 (p: 31/07/92) has mentions of events that do not align with the publish date, mentioning both Phase 1, Leas Cliff Hall (Folkestone) "on 1st August rocked. We're sorry we missed it and won't make the same mistake again" and Pandemonium, 051 Club (Liverpool) "had it's first night on Thursday 30th July" - I'm assuming both of these were presumptive/advance mentions.

Issue #43 (p: 24/09/93) also has mention of an event not aligning with the publish date - stating "The next Jungle Fever took place at the Warehouse in Curtain Road on 24th September. We have to say that the production as regards to stage etc., was excellent" - again am assuming was a presumptive mention.

Issue #49 (p: 11/03/94) also appears out of date but probably can be explained by Ravescene having ran the poll for the Elevation Awards and hence are announcing the results for the weekend in parallel with the actual event taking place on the 12th.

Issue #52 (p: 23/09/94) is a guestimate, going by it is primarily promoting their event for the 29th Oct and was likely sent to subscribers/members only - and that "Any ticket orders for the Halloween Party received after 21/10/94 will be returned" and to "allow 28 days for delivery" for any merchandise orders.

If anyone else would like to double check on the dates and see if they all appear in order, would be great... or confirm on details for issues 2, 7, 8, 16, 27A & 30
