There's an INTA feature in The Scene magazine #4, 'November' 1994 but it's not mentioned there, also have looked at their feature in Knowledge #4 'July/August 1995' that you kindly have a scan of but it's not mentioned there either. I don't recall where that "hard to step to" story originates from. Roadblock left this comment on a soundcloud mix: https://soundcloud.com/selectabwoy/grooveriders-hardstep-selection-09032019 "Seem to remember Rider saying had a mate who said he was 'hardstepping' when he danced to drum'n'bass that he was dropping in his sets at the time of this album, so I guess it's more of a vibe than a genre, originally anyway. Probably inevitable that such a wonderful descriptive term quickly got drafted into use for a specific strain of dnb." This was Mixmag's attempt to explain the term in their March 1997 issue

Thanks. So I haven't completely imagined it. I'm thinking it may be a quote from one of these Kiss shows now. 12 hours ago, jj said: This was Mixmag's attempt to explain the term in their March 1997 issue That's interesting. Clearly, Grooverider's 'hardstep' did signify towards something - I gave the example of his playing of "Saint Angel" on his 28.12.1994 Kiss show and his comments made there on that. The actual album however, I would characterise more his attempt to establish the term, rather than being the defining manifesto of that. Curious some of the other attempts to define these words. I seem to remember trying to describe to someone on fb of 'jump-up' being a slightly perjorative term at first, when first came about in mid-late 1994. Later of course it became more of an actual sub-genre category.
