haste
weren't there represses that had cat nos LION1/2/3 that featured different tracks to the original LIONs? i may be wrong about this but just seem to remember that being the case
Ornette
Yeah. From the list I had some time ago @ http://www.congonatty.com : LION 001 - Black Star ft Top Cat: Champion Deejay / Kunte KinteLION 002 - Conquering Lion feat. Supercat: Code RedLION 003 - Conquering Lion: Inah Sound / Ras ProjectLION 004 - Princess Lydia / Rastaman feat. Beenie Man / BlessedLION 005 - X-Project ft Frankie Paul & Tenor Fly: Jah Sunshine / ?... Looking these up,the LION3 one is that one that's etched RAS PROJECT b/w INAH SOUND with the tracks mentioned here; either LION2 or LION4 is the catalogue of the Princess Lydia EPhttp //rolldabeats.com/release/2395/congo_natty_records/princesslydia- or, LION2 is the plate etched PRINCESS LYDIA FOREVER b/w LION JUNGLEand LION4 is the plate etched RASTAMAN b/w BLESSED- or, the "Princess Lydia EP" was simply a bundling of LION2 & LION4 that happened at some point... or maybe even didn't... sch_pr here indicates that single plates were common; the LION1 one appears to have been a straight white label repress of the original LION1. this link here confirms much of this detailhttp //congonatty.jungli.st/new_old.phtml (web archive)
Ornette
Bit more on this - found a ref for Spoox's full list of 12 on web archive, looks like was up from oct 2004 onwards https://web.archive....atty.jungli.st/ [28 Nov 2004] an earlier version, with just LION1 - 5 was up around feb 2002. Checking for Nu-Urban seems earliest reference is Sept 02 for 1-5, and 6-8 were available at least from May 03 onwards, with 9-12 only showing July 2004 (but probably older) Listed details from Nu-Urban, cross-referenced against Juno & Hard To Find: LION 001 Black Star feat. Ornette
Something that is a little bit clearer... is the 'ZION' series of represses. These were all pressed between 2008-2009, likely in conjunction with Nu-Urban, as all have the MPO stamper impressions of three concentric rings. They are also all definitely re-presses, as run-out strings so far have proven as matching the original releases. As well they are white labels, much like the original releases (except for 1 & 3 which had 'full' releases) These first show up on Nu-Urban around Oct 08 with five listed (with two as "Coming Soon"), and then later, another three from at least May 09. However, I've not seen any trace of 2, 7, 9, 12 having been done... or 6... in fact, I can't find any trace of an original ZION06... Does a ZION06 actually exist?? Listed details from Nu-Urban, cross-referenced against Juno: ZION01 Rebel MC - Exodus / Mystical Vibration [Oct 08] Juno: 11 Sep 08plays: Exodus & Mystical VibrationZION 1A1 Music HOUSE "EXODUS" b/w ZION 1AA-1 Music HOUSE ZION03 Rebel MC - Jungle Soldier / Rasta Music [Oct 08] Juno: 10 Sep 08plays: Rasta Music & Jungle SouljahZION 3-1 Music HOUSE ETHEOPIA b/w LION 3AA1 Music HOUSE ZION04 Rebel MC - Lose Your Soul / Rebel Music [Oct 08] Juno: 30 Oct 09plays: Lose Your Soul & Rebel MusicZION 4A Music HOUSE b/w ZION 4B Joseph ZION05 Rebel MC - Seven Seas / Ghetto Life [Oct 08 / May 09] Juno: 23 Oct 08plays: Seven Seas & Ghetto Life ZION13 Rebel MC & Peter Bouncer - Junglist (98 Remix / Original) [Oct 08 / May 09] Juno: 23 Oct 08plays: Junglist ('98 Remix) & Junglist (Original Dubplate)ZION 13A1. Ornette
Couple of candidates for ZION06 ? http //www.rolldabeats.com/release/2375/congo_natty_records/champion99 Champion Natty (99 Remix) / Jah Set It (DJ Kane Remix) http //www.rolldabeats.com/release/2380/congo_natty_records/hs01 Emperor Selassie I '99 / Revolution Both are '99' remixes of earlier tracks, a theme common to several of the ZION releases As, I notice ZION09 doesn't actually appear to be etched that going by the discogs entry, though is definitely listed as such on both HTFR and Juno, Though, this might be just because someone hasn't entered it properly. Incidentally, someone mentioned DJ Kane has commented on youtube denying the CHAMPION99 release as a remix of his! I'm just trying to confirm where that detail came from... I see the discogs entry was submitted with that all the way back in 2002, possibly with a suggestion of it from Chemical... The old cosmic breaks discography has no mention of DJ Kane for it however http //www.cosmicbreaks.com/natty/congonatty.html (still active, would you believe) Edited January 30 by Ornette Fixed the DJ Kane 'commented' link, that the move to IPB4 had incorrectly altered to an embedded object [edit v2]
Ornette
Interesting... I've just noticed the 'RAS' sequence doesn't have a #6 either! Seems that both 'RAS' & 'ZION' both miss out #6 and end on #13... hmmm
Ornette
On 9/11/2019 at 3:13 PM, Ornette said: LION 009 Tribe of Issachar - Tribal Natty (97 Mix) / Tribal Natty (Original Dubplate Mix) Juno: 17 Jul 03 plays: Tribal Natty '97 Ok, so after a bit of confusion on this, looks like the true LION 009 has turned up finally, on discogs! https://www.discogs.com/release/15682786-Tribe-Of-Issachar-Here-I-Come Going by the pictures, it has the same stamper impression as what we see from the other LION 'reissues' - that is, a sunken depressed inner area with a single concentric circle at a distance from the spindle - reminiscent of the stamper impression of either Damont or Broadcrest Apparently it has the run-out etchings TRIBAL NATTY b/w TRIBAL which corresponds with the worded run-outs on the other LIONs, though is not clear if it has the '✡'/ star of david markings seen with some of the others. I'll update the post above with this detail, also will update with some slightly better guestimates for some of those Juno datings given as '1990'... which are obviously well out. So far, the item codes in the urls for the listings on Juno have all proven to be chronologically ascending, which by doing a bit of back-and-forth means we can narrow down each to within a month - if not much closer. Ornette
One further question on all this is - what exactly, is the correct format of these catalogue numbers for this white label LION sequence? On 9/11/2019 at 3:13 PM, Ornette said: Bit more on this - found a ref for Spoox's full list of 12 on web archive, looks like was up from oct 2004 onwards https://web.archive....atty.jungli.st/ [28 Nov 2004] Spoox's list on the link above (and indeed, as cited also here) has them all as LION 0xx... From a bit of scouring otherwise on wayback machine, I was able to find a bit more info about this - One of the various urls I was able to confirm for Exodus Distribution (as ran by DJ Souljah) was www.exodusdistribution.com - which seems to have been active for a short while during 2002: http://web.archive.org/web/20020206192107/www.exodusdistribution.com/ Though you can't see the images for that table-layout website anymore, one of the panels from it links to the site www.docky.com - which, from clicking on the text stating 'Enter', takes you to into the main store at which point another link is given, stating: "We are official Congo Natty Suppliers. Check out our current range of Natty vinyls here." https://web.archive.org/web/20011203084741/http://www.docky.com/docky/index.htm (Turns out this Docky 'official' Congo Natty page was linked already from spoox's old congonatty.jungli.st site - and indeed, from the older natty.dhs.org version of it also...) Travelling on that wayback link to the snapshot Feb 07 2002 confirms some details on LIONs 1, 2, 3 & 4 - going by all this, it would seem to confirm this LION sequence of cat numbers was indeed something that came direct from Exodus Distribution, and therefore, were 'official' cats for this series. To cross-reference all what we have, lets see: # Docky Juno Nu-Urban HTFR hhv.de 'SOUR' 1 LION 1 LION 001 LION 001 – 2 LION 2 LION 002 LION 002 – 3 LION 3 LION 003 LION 003 LION003 "Lion 003" 4 LION004 LION 004 LION 004 – "Lion 004" LION004 [BPM] (11-27-2002) 5 – LION 005 LION 005 – LION5 (#4307 2002/07/29) Nu-Urban 6 – – LION 006 LION006 7 – LION 007 LION 007 – – (#5169 2002/12/21) 8 – LION 008 LION 008 LION8 – (#1487 2001/02/07) Nu-Urban 9 – LION 009 LION 009 – 10 – LION 010 LION 010 LION010 LION10 (#6187 2003/08/12) 11 – – LION 011 – LION 11 (#6888 2004/02/06) 12 – – LION 012 – LION 12 (#6889 2004/02/06) So I guess going by all this, it would seem the number form 0xx is correct, with the majority indicating a space between the 'LION' and the number...
