- Spoken Word

There are probably several missing from these lists and we're mainly concerned with the first three main genres (for obvious reasons). However we would like to know whether people agree or disagree with the list so far and if there are extra genres that you think should be added.

Adding to tracks

Genres are added on a track by track basis and, at the moment, admin users are only able to add these. Eventually we are likely to open this up to the RDB community but, for now, we'd appreciate your help in letting us know what track should have what genre.

Please post links to labels/releases with the relevant genres. If these are different for different tracks then feel free to tell us which genres apply to which tracks in the link

Examples

These are my opinions only and others may think differently

Hardcore

- Darkside

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/dark_horse/dhr004/

(haven't used this genre much as it's one of the weaker ones imo)

- Happy Hardcore

Shitloads of this in the database, not much tagged though I dont' think

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/remix_records/rec005/ is an early example

- Jungle Tekno

Signifies the Basement Recs kinda sound that was popular in 92/93

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/basement_records/brss027/

(again, not used this one much personally as not 100% on its inclusion)

- Old Skool

Can't remember what I've tagged with this. It's just there to distinguish early 90s hardcore with more modern releases. Again, a little weak in description and only really there for this purpose

Jungle

- Atmospheric

Anything on Good Looking in the early 90s

http://www.rolldabeats.com/label/3rd_eye

http://www.rolldabeats.com/label/photek_records

All of the above

- Ragga Jungle

Obvious really...often amen heavy with ragga vocals

- Hardstep

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/proper_talent/pt011/

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/urban_gorilla/ugr006/

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/ganja_records/gan012/ (?)

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/ganja_records/gan011/ - I'd certainly call So Damn Fresh hardstep

(this could be another debatable term btw)

Drum & Bass

- Intelligent

Here to cover later versions of the Atmospheric stuff listed above?

- Jump Up

Any of the new jump up stuff...Twisted Individual etc.

For old skool...

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/flex_records/flex010/ - this kinda thing

Also obviously applies to the Aphrodite/Urban Takeover stuff too

- Liquid

Can't think of any examples, should be obvious enough though

- Techstep

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/no_u_turn_records/nut016/

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/no_u_turn_records/nut015/

http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/no_u_turn_records/nut014/

The rest I probably don't know enough about to give examples

what do you think about adding something like "Wobble" as subgenre to dnb?

maybe someone has a better name for this!?

or should those tunes/releases/labels be tagged with "Drum & Bass/JumpUp" ?

(there is a lot of JumpUp i like but i don't like the wobble-thingy at all)

further it would be great to have a page with a few examples to to every genre/subgenre (in case it doesn't exist anywhere on rdb).

I'd really appreciate people's opinions here. I'd quite like to open up the genre stuff to all users as there's no way we'll get it populated otherwise. I do think we need to make sure everything's all cool before that's done, though

Sorry...completely missed this lot!

I don't think wobble should be added. To me, it has negative connotations and jump up would probably do. I'm not even sure that this sub-genre thing is that good an idea as where do you draw the line? Also one man's "wobble" would be another man's "jump up" and the two might disagree as to what each one means.

For now, I'd tag anything that fits into the wobble category as jump up.

I'll put some examples in the first post in a bit

Does halfstep qualify as an established subgenre of drum & bass yet?

Have to admit that I don't really know what halfstep is. Is this the sort of thing that Amit makes?

what do you think about dnb's 'minimal' subgenre?

the kind of sound what Instramental, Data, Spectrasoul, Dbridge, Survival, Lynx, Sabre, Alix Perez.. has been pushing for some time now?

personally i like to call it postneuro (LOL) but more specifically i mean a mix of the boom bip boom bip sound, liquid and neurofunk. (loxy's and d-bridge's sets especially)

what do you think? is it too niche to be listed?

and the jump up issue is well tricky too. i mean when you compare pish posh's up jumps the boogie and clipz' slippery slopes for example.. they're both jump up but the sound is very different.

I've never heard of minimal, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be included.

The genres are really just there to give a basic idea of the sort of tune it is. There are big differences in tunes, as you've pointed out, but it would be silly to try and describe exactly what a tune sounds like using this method. That's what the sound clips and YouTube vidoes are there for, after all!

At some point I'm hoping to add in user generated tags for tunes as well. That way people can tag a tune with whatever they want, this would probably be quite helpful in terms of the sort of descriptive stuff you're talking about. Then again, I can see people just tagging loads of things with clownstep, so who knows how useful it would be!

FYI - we're going to be doing a load of work on the genres stuff this weekend, so should have some changes to the above structure in a bit

Drum & Bass

- Drumfunk

- Intelligent

- Jump Up

- Liquid

- Neurofunk

- Techstep

I saw you forgot something that should be add in my opinion : Darkstep

I it's a quite marginal subgenre which is often included to Techstep but I think it should be add aside like Neurofunk. Ok, it's kid from Techstep but it's by far darker, more aggressive & frenetic than Techstep imo. With lot of sample from horror movie about ghost, destruction, kill and other creepy stuff like that.

It's quite easy to class them, you just have to read their titles hahaha : Never Say Die / Fear / Suicide Noise / etc. no I'm joking :P

But any way I ask this cause I like techstep too but now I think there are clear border between old-school dark atmospheric from techstep you put as example and and stuff like this (I let you judge yourself it's your site after all) :

http://www.rolldabea...ngs/freaklp001/

http://www.rolldabea...ngs/obscene017/

http://www.rolldabea...ings/intrec011/

Darkstep is way more massive & frenetic, suppose bring adrenaline rush. (Darkstep on Wikipedia). Respect and greetings for all the stuff you made on this site. A big big reference in our subculture.

EDIT : Ah yes also maybe add also the Techno-DNB

For find example for this kind of Dnb you should look "amex" on youtube or "Cyclone" cause I can't find clip example here.
