The Return of DJ Crystl...

Just thought I'd let you know that DJ Crystl will be making a one-off, special apperance dj-ing later this month!

He's appearing with regular dj & personal friend Script doing a back-to-back spot at Technicality at the Rhythm Factory, Whitechapel (E1) on Friday, 26th August

I'm sure many of you who remember having their minds blown by each successive DJ Crystl 12" as they came out during 1993-1994 will be there to ensure they witness this momentous event in person, for sure I know that I certainly will.

More information can be found on the Subvert Central thread or Facebook event:

Yes! "Deep Space"

For me, those first 4 releases are what's key here - "Frantic Situation" b/w "Drop XTC", "Inna Year 3000" b/w "The Dark Crystl", "Deep Space" b/w "Crystlize" & "Warpdrive" b/w "Meditation"

I mean, the first one was like some new pumped up hardcore, the likes of we'd never heard before, a tune breaking 160bpm at a time (late 92) you're still hearing Baby D "Fantasy" cained across the pirates; scraping in at a paltry 145bpm even after pushed to a +8% pitch increase! And the b-side wern't too bad either ;)

"Deep Space" you've mentioned, another awesome awesome track really developing the new sound. But personally for me, its that following "Inna Year 3000" b/w "The Dark Crystl" august time '93 release that has to be my favourite of the lot... if only wasn't for that its so badly mastered! Well, to be fair, I suppose "Inna Year 3000" doesn't sound so bad but "Dark Crystl" is sooo flat sounding, I find I really have to tune up the mixer whenever I play it. Compared to the lush sound staging of all the other Dee Jay releases you can see how its really lacking. Universal Soldier on B2VOS once posted up a really good explanation as to why that was the case, lemme see if I can get him to post up

Otherwise, "Warpdrive" b/w "Meditation" is the one Crystl always gets name checked for, and quite rightly so, aside from my caveat about the FT001 release it is surely his best work if not one of the top drum & bass 12"s of all time. "Warpdrive" will still sound futuristic in 100 years time.

Any one looking for a little taste before the main event can check out this back-in-the-day mix tape by the man himself, this one has been floating around the net for a while, shame there's no artwork but yes lots of scratching and old skool hardcore tunage, check it:

Not sure what exactly what he'll be playing on the night but Script on Subvert Central has suggested "this probably will be your only chance to ever see Crystl dj old skool dnb again" so should be something worth looking forward to.

Last bump before the end of the night!

As an aside, I came across this a little while back, looks like Will of Sublogic Recoredings was looking at putting this out. Its an unreleased track from 94 called "Kold Drumz" and its just the kind of inventive drum & bass I came to love from Crystl, interesting beats & a musical structure that actually goes somewhere

Looking at Crystl's discography its always a little bit sad that more didn't come out so anything unreleased by him is always going to pique my attention. Not sure what happened to this but this would be something I'd definitely buy, any other opinions??

Your Destiny is, by far and away, Crystl's best track. I think it must be just about the darkest tune I've ever heard.

I remember, when 'Let it roll 2000' came out, I was in touch with some guy who was promoting it - can't remember his name (Hades?) - but he knew Crystl personally and asked him for me, what is your best tune? It is Your Destiny.

I wonder if he kicks off the set with it? Probably more likely to be the flip - Sweet Dreams.

I would 100% be at this, but I am at someone's wedding...
