Artist: Jimmy Crash

Track name: Crash Course

Original release: 12" https://www.discogs.com/Jimmy-Crash-Crash-Course/release/72483

Label: Nu Groove Records (US)

Cat number: NG 081

Year: 1991

Based on: James Brown - Funky Drummer

Examples:

Cosmo & Dibs - In A Fantasy

Nebula II - Peacemaker (?)

Notes:

I reckon this is the original source as its quite a stripped back track, which later got remixed making more 'hardcore'

Ahhh, yes, I did see the other thread. http://rolldabeats.c...showtopic=56637 This one has quite its own distinctive cadence to it I think, where as the Alyson Williams I'd be tempted just to have as a footnote to Funky Drummer

As a little trial, I knocked up this little clip. I'd suspect Jimmy Crash sampled from the Eternity track.

What do you think?

Thought there was a connection with these breaks and think the sample progression is right (Sleeping to Eternity to Crash) and i think they all got sampled alot, especially Eternity.

Always loved this chugging juggernaut of a beat!

So, being the Subject 13 - Eternity track is from 1990, what would you have called it? Hip-house, house... what?

Some called it "Freestyle" i think i just called it "Breakbeat" or "Hardcore" or just "Good" or "Wow wtf is this?" SUAD or DJ Mink, is classic Freestyle imo.

1990 was my favourite year, it had everything. You would regularly hear HipHop, House, Breaks, Techno, Electro, everything played on the same night! But not in a way they do now in some multi genre mashup sort of thing. It was all new and all good! The genre lines weren't clear at this point.

Was mental!!

Freestyle? What is this, I hadn't heard that term before...

The only thing I'm wondering about though is the loop used is more 'muddy' than in the US release ,and by the time you get to the some of the others the 'band hit' is starting to sound more like an open hi-hat...

Mikeeee maybe you'd like to add your examples from the other thread?

Possibly they all took from the remix 12" which seeing is the UK release stands to reason. Which, *ahem* is not in the database

Holy Ghost Inc - Stealth [Holy Ghost Inc] 1991

Nebula II - Peace Maker (Original and Remix) [Reinforced Records] 1992

Although there are 3 versions of this 2nd gen Funky Drummer break and they all have differences, i think the thread should be headed as Alyson Williams - Sleep Talk. I Think it's what started this particular chain of Funky Drummer.
