I almost shat my pants when i read this thread...... been waiting for like 14 years to find out the original source for this break, THANK YOU!

Thanks, appreciate it. I've been looking for it equally long. I was just damned lucky that I just happened to stumble upon it.

OMG - this completely slipped under the radar!

Just spotted your mention in this: http://www.rolldabeats.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=50431

I notice your clip posted clearly shows 'both' versions of the break!

What hardcore tracks is it used on?

X Ray Xperiments - Take No Chance

would be one example.

Other examples of break usage would be:

Roni Size & DJ Die - Music Box

Marvelous Caine - Hitman

both tracks use the same section of the break.

I can't think of any examples that use the 'other', more oft used loop; my heads gone blank! Its most often used as percussion, to underpin other breaks.

Skool Of Hard Knocks - Everybody

is one example that comes to mind

It would also seem to me that this break :

is itself based around this 'Sandy'. In fact when I first recognised "Bonita Applebum" in 1996 I was convinced that I had id'd this 'Sandy' break; more recent listening proved that it was infact a different beat, albeit used in its own right on occasion.

The two beats are very similar though, and listening now it would very likely seem CJ Macintosh built up his beat from this very Supreme DJ Nyborn tune here.

Excellent work!

Haha, I did the exact same thing.

also, anyone know what original break was used to make it? good work man

probably wrong but i reckon it's individually sliced hits from the 'shack up' break and pitched up

Just thought I should mention that there's a third generation version of this break at the end of Roni Size & DJ Die - Music Box [Full Cycle]. It has a ride cymbal hit that fades out with a long decay and then fades back in/reverses over one bar of the break - this appears right near the end of the tune. The versatility break can also be sampled clean from here too, without the added ride cymbal part.

I've heard this used in a few tunes over the years. Remarc - 2:01 [suburban Base] and Just Jungle - Sky [Trouble On Vinyl] are two of them.

And, lady and gents, the reason it's called sandy: Three Times Dope - Mr Sandman -

Not had chance to figure out which came first, but given that people call it Sandy, I guess this is the actually sampled source

Yeah, that's right, the CJ Macintosh remix of it which explains the similarity to the Bonita Applebum beat, which he also done

Am wondering though, about the 'Ray Keith' varient of it. Its a lot more busy but cant quite work out how its done.

Here's a good example

Renegade - Dark Soldier [1996]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51xY7QLSxHA

Also in others he worked on around then ish too

Anyone have any ideas?

So was about to say I found a earlier use of this, in 1994 by DJ Pooch...

https://djpooch.band...-dj-pooch-remix

"2. Bells Refix"

But when listening to the clips for the original release here, http://rolldabeats.c...t_and_run/car02 there's a different track on the b-side than what's on the bandcamp for it.

So it's looking likely on a Ray Keith specific variant...
