The_Manipulator Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 Well, here's a new problem for you guys: Are we going to use promo CD's, and how are we going to handle them if they contain releases from multiple labels? I've got promo CD's (with official stickers like they normally put on the vinyl) that contain: Invader 027 & Outbreak 28 Transparent 7 & Heavy Rotation 3 & Heavy Rotation 4(with a note that HR3's tracklist differs from this one:Nu-Balance - Money ShotNoetic - Demolition Man) Apart from the usual problem that CD promo's don't have a catalogue number (except for majors), we now don't really have a label! So, what do you guys think... Quote
thijs Posted June 13, 2004 Report Posted June 13, 2004 aaargh... why do label owners don't think about the problems there are causing us  personally... yes i would like to have them in here. but... i seriously would not have a clue how to put them in correctly. Quote
ib_su Posted June 13, 2004 Report Posted June 13, 2004 does that really worth listing? isn't it just a CD-R as a sneak preview for shops (djs)? i've never met such a "compilation", so i might be wrong... if you receive stuff like that regularly, and such discs can get in public access, it might worth cataloging in this case maybe it could go under the name of the distributor as this is the common "force" behind and the relation between the labels (at least by the ones you mentioned) (majors do such "samplers" on a regular base. so we could figure out a title that fits, like "alphamagic 2004 summer" ) Quote
The_Manipulator Posted June 13, 2004 Author Report Posted June 13, 2004 does that really worth listing? isn't it just a CD-R as a sneak preview for shops (djs)? i've never met such a "compilation", so i might be wrong... if you receive stuff like that regularly, and such discs can get in public access, it might worth catalogingOlder ones I've got were the same as their vinyl counterparts. The Alpha Magic distributed promo's (on vinyl) usually have a small white sticker with the artist, label and playlist. I've got CD promo's with the same stickers on them. But now I've gotten compilation ones... One place that they turn up is as review copies for magazines. in this case maybe it could go under the name of the distributor as this is the common "force" behind and the relation between the labels (at least by the ones you mentioned) (majors do such "samplers" on a regular base. so we could figure out a title that fits, like "alphamagic 2004 summer" ) One is indeed called "Alpha Magic Promo CD", so it seems the most logical choice. As far as adding them: I think these ones will be more common in the future (no, I'm not on any mailing lists... I just pick them up second hand every now and again). But the Alpha Magic ones will probably be... hmm... how to say this... be "unique". As in: there will be only 1 promo CD with a certain release. I've seen at least 5 different promo's for "Barcelona", from 1-track CD's with just the radio edit to 5-track CD's including remixes and a "dub mix". But we do have to limit it to "official" promo CD's. Everybody can just burn a downloaded vinyl promo onto a CD or make a compilation. And in the future all CD promo's will probably be pressed (the Alpha Magic ones are greenish, so just CD-R's, but the Barcelona ones were pressed). Quote
Phokus Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 I can see the point for major labels that have signed up big tunes or producers - I've got a couple of Sony / Columbia promo CDs featuring Grooverider remixes, for instance, alongside about 5 or 6 other mixes. Quote
mi:t Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 I'd also support the listing of those official promos. as far as Grooverider is concerned, most of those tunes never come out. and those promos also might contain some interesting tracks and mixes not on full releases. Quote
