Ornette Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 Well I have many unreleased tracks to add to this database, which I'll probably add drip by drip, but how about this one for starters? The early part of 1996 (Feb/March) saw "Skylab" first being played out and about and it is pretty similar to the official, late 1996 (Nov) release. But for some reason, someone must have felt it needed changing. The released version keeps making use of the "Tighten Up" breakbeat every few bars and is very annoying, making what was a very effective dark roll-out quite whimsical and flimsy. Well I 'spose, the "Tighten Up" breakbeat WAS very popular back then... fashion... huh! The dubplate version does not have this constant switching of breaks, instead it keeps the simple skippy backbeat / pitched down "amen" juxtapositioning all the way through... (although giving out completely to the piched-down "amen" at the end). Quote
Guest Proto J Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 go listen to the version that was on one of the "artcore" compilations, i've noticed it's different to the metalheadz release version... Quote
Ornette Posted January 5, 2006 Author Report Posted January 5, 2006 go listen to the version that was on one of the "artcore" compilations, i've noticed it's different to the metalheadz release version...Proto J - it seems that you ARE right. I have just checked out at least the 'mixed' version of this Artcore 3 album and the track there IS the unreleased "Skylab" mix. But is this the same version on the unmixed CD? Could it be?Oh man I hope so! Recommend everyone checks this out immediately: 03 Skylab [Mixed].m4a Quote

But I've heard another mix of the this Artcore volume and on that mix the Metalheadz release was played.ANd I think is more accurate if we call them Ed Rush & Dom - Skylab because Dominic was the producer of that tracks (the typical Dom sound can be heard on them anyway). So, in this release there was played the Metalheadz version:http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/react/reactcd099x Quote
Ornette Posted January 10, 2006 Author Report Posted January 10, 2006 Confirmed - Artcore 3 unmixed has the 'unreleased' verison of "Skylab" :bop: :yahoo: ? ? :pro: ? :dancing: ? Need to update database. What do we title: Skylab (Alternate Mix)????????Skylab (Promo Mix)????????????Skylab (Original Mix) ????????? And indeed, what to we title the METH024 version: Skylab (Remix)??????????????????Skylab (Released Mix)????????Skylab?????????????????????????????? Man. If I only knew this in 1997. My life would have turned out so differently... Quote
Phokus Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Think the version on Metalheadz should remain simply as Skylab, and the mix on Artcore 3 named as Skylab (alternate mix) Now I need to track down a copy of Artcore 3! Quote
haste Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Agree with Phokus. "Alternate mix" is probably the best option Quote
Proto J Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 i dig this alternate version, but i still prefer the headz release... personally, i dig the tighten up fills, and other things about it more (like the break switching, it's some of my favorite break switching ever actually, and that one windy sound, it makes it sound all dark, it's got a rad atmosphere to it, the headz release version just screams techstep to me, but i've always loved that tune since i bought it in '96, i still play it)...
