R-Hawk Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 Not sure if there is a thread already on this in the forum, but thought it would be interesting information to know. The BPM of a tune is a fact, not something subjective like a record's value or what someone thinks of a tune. Admitedly, it's a big job to do - but could be done alongside adding soundclips, using a BPM counter, or software. For people using the db as a resource for finding records of a certain speed, I think it would be very useful. Quote
haste Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 I don't see why we shouldn't have it in the database but I don't think it will be a priority to collect this information. If people are happy to do it then they're more than welcome to provide us with BPM counts. I think it'll be a while before this info would be implemented on the live site, though, there is much more to add before that Quote
kn00tcn Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 ooh neat idea & would help dj's, but that's tons of work... a lot of times, artists stick to their preferred bpm (a lot of danny c stuff hangs around 175/180 while spirit could be 170 etc...... Quote

Bhima Posted May 27, 2006 Report Posted May 27, 2006 What about tunes that have a BPM that changes? There are a few! Quote
Jamie Dubs Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Cool idea, if for no other reason than to map out artists' favorite BPM, or draw some cute graphs of trends (i.e. west coast stuff getting quicker over the last few years, the initial speedups from hardcore -> ragga -> etc) I've used the SSL BPM analyzer to get BPM data on tons of tracks, and it tends to be almost perfect. Is there an RPC interface to submit data to RDB, or do you have to enter this kind of stuff manually? Quote
The_Manipulator Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING There are a LOT of programs that use a calculation routine that's COMPLETELY WRONG!!! The Behringer BPM counter's a good example of a piece of hardware that just sucks... There are 2 proper ways:1. Count the number of beats in a minute (duh...)2. Count the time it takes for a number of beats, then calculate how much it would be in a minute. The longer the time you're counting, the more precise the BPM should be... There's (at least) 1 wrong way:For each SINGLE BEAT calculate the speed, and take the average from your new count and the previous total. Why is this wrong? Try this:Beats: X---X---X---X--- (the X-es are the beats)Now tap in: X---X-X-----X--- (so offset 1 beat). If you get a count that's a lot higer than normal... they're using a wrong calculation routine... So therefore I'd still wouldn't trust supplied BPMs (Behringer calculated BPM's for example are usually about 5 lower than proper ones). so it isn't as precise as one that you would route through a mixer. If the "beat match" led on my old mixer is anything to judge by it seems to get confused when it doesn't hear a kick every time. And even progs like VirtualDJ screw up BPMs quite often (even on club tunes). Quote
Cob Posted May 29, 2006 Report Posted May 29, 2006 I'm with Theorie, waste of time. One of those pieces of information that we might collect for a few hundred tracks but most will never get done and just leaves a gap in most database entries. I think there are other priorities - the user submitted automatic creation of releases the first one! That would free up Thijs to concentrate on more site development. Quote
