Leif Posted November 14, 2008 Report Posted November 14, 2008 This would probably be too much of a hassle but I think it would def. be handy if there was a field for track key, maybe one that could be edited by reg. users instead of having to be posted on the forum (less work for the admins). Since I use mostly vinyl it would be nice to have an online reference instead of using my shitty ears to guess it by myself. Chemical started doing this recently but so far they only have key listings for recent stuff, and I don't know any other sites that list tracks by key (if you do, please post it!). Of course I'd be more than willing to contribute key info about the tunes in my collection, or help in any other way. Quote
Logic Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 In the new design, there is a user-submitted comments section for each release. Ostensibly, you could use this field for anything, including the keys of the tracks Quote
haste Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 It's just another field in the database. We won't add it for the forthcoming relaunch but don't see why it can't go in in the future Quote
Leif Posted December 3, 2008 Author Report Posted December 3, 2008 oh cool, i didnt know there was going to be a comments section in the relaunch. that should do fine Quote
Stryke Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 This would be awesome. If it could somehow show up in the my collection list it would rule Quote
Faulk7 Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 Actually, I was just thinking about this idea recently. I think it would give RDB a lot of credibility if we did this. It might be a strenuous move, but I think its a great idea and should be kept in mind. Quote
haste Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 I don't know the keys of any of my tunes but just go by ear when mixing if I want them to mix in key. Out of interest, is this info that can be sourced from anywhere or is it just something that a fair few RDB users happen to have worked out for themselves? The comments idea is fine for now but I'd rather build this into the database properly as it's pretty useful info, I think Quote
haste Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 It looks like this software would actually do most of the work for us - http://www.mixedinkey.com/Homepage.aspx It seems to export as Excel which would actually be perfectly usable for all of our soundclips & data structure. I could point it at our sound clips and see how it works pretty easily. Anyone used it before? It does BPMs too. Of course this relies on the tunes being at 0 when they were recorded Quote
theorie Posted February 24, 2009 Report Posted February 24, 2009 Chemical Records have added this field to their entries now. The key of a tune is even a URL, allowing you to search for tunes in the same key - one day I'll do that and mix together all the tunes I have that come up in the results, just to see the difference... So you actually want a list of tunes with the same key at a certain BPM... Quote
manhattan4 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 http://www.harmonic-mixing.com/KeyResultsDatabase.aspx has a list of keys for 50k+ tunes, have to pay for it tho this post on the mixed in key forums explains pitch affecting the key of a track http://community.mixedinkey.com/Topic.aspx?ID=5567 Quote
haste Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Would that database actually have any of the tracks that are in our db? There are 105,000 tracks in rolldabeats alone Quote
Faulk7 Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 I use the Mixed In Key software and its very useful when I dj. Up to this point, I know it seems strenuous to do almost every song in the RDB database, but I think it will be well worth it for useful information. I also like the idea on the "search" function by key, I think it would make searching for tunes a hell of a lot easier than just sifting around for hours hearing music. Thus far, I think the harmonic key option should just be another feature that should be displayed by each song of an artist. If a harmonic key is missing, unknown, or wrong, it should be edited like any other thing on the RDB database (such as adding an artist's new info, myspace page, label..etc) As for the key and its change in speed, it shouldnt really matter. Obviously the harmonic key pitch is going to change if the BPM is altered, but with its original BPM and Key, it shouldnt really matter because shift BPM doesnt affect the next track being mixed into the set. Its key change will also shift for accommodation of the speed. So, the original key at whatever original set BPM is what is most important in knowing. -F Quote
