Break name: Bonita Applebum (Why? Remix)

Artist: A Tribe Called Quest

Track name: Bonita Applebum (Why? Remix)

Original release: 12"

Label: Jive

Cat number:

Year: 1990

Producer: It's a remix by the U.K. CJ Macintosh

Also available on:

A Tribe Called Quest - Anthology (compilation album, second 'bonus' CD)

Example:

Mampie Swift - Just Roll (Suburban Base, 1996)

Notes:

Well, I can't say I've discovered the 'Sandy' break yet but hows about this?

Its similar, but not quite...

There's a chance that it could be though - maybe someone could try experimenting with retriggering the beats.

Not to be confused with the original "Bonita Applebum" version, as ripped off by The Fugees for their agonising (IMHO) "Killing Me Softly" cover version.

Interesting, I've got that Anthology, will have to dig it out tonight :)

In case anyone's interested, the original Bonita Applebum uses R.A.M.P.'s Daylight break - http://www.rolldabeats.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=36817

I'm presuming Roni sampled it direct from R.A.M.P., because of the name of the track he used it on, but there's potential for others to have used the original Bonita Applebum as the source of a second gen break.

Oh hold on...

"Daylight" - you mean the ambient musicality of the track.

I actually know the tune- one of Roy Ayers' production projects.

Good tune.

Ah crap, my sources were wrong then!

I've not actually got the RAMP tune, does indeed look like the beats from Bonita Applebum are from Dixie Chicken.

Guess I'll move the Daylight thread to the sample ID forum :)

There's three versions the Original (beat ala Fugee's Killing Me Softly), the 'Why' Remix (music from Carly Simon's Why) and a alternate, new lyrics version (music ala Isley Brothers/Notorious BIG - Big Poppa) called the Hootie Mix. Which one do you mean

Didn't CJ also do a remix of the alternate lyrics version??? I think the "Slave" mix or something, as it's based on Grace Jones?

on the original bonita applebum... anyone know what the original sample is during Q-tip's intro? I dont think thats been mentioned at all...

Hi - I think you're looking for the Rotary Connection's song "Memory band" (later sampled by Fugees for Killing me Softly). If you look that song up on Allmusic (maybe Amazon?) you can hear a clip. It's the "Bwow-wow-woww-wowww" at the beginning.

The main sample throughout the song is "Daylight" by Ramp.

hope that helps.
